Vance "Bo" H. Richardson

July 31, 1937 — November 9, 2024

With deep sadness we announce that Vance “Bo” Howard Richardson, 87, passed away at home Saturday, November 9, 2024.

He was born July 31, 1937 in Jarratt, VA to the late James Howard Richardson and Louise O’Berry Richardson.  Preceding him in death was his brother James “PeeWee” Richardson and sister Vivian R. Wright.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Abernathy Richardson.  He leaves to cherish his memories, three children.  A devoted son David R. Richardson and wife Robin of Jarratt, VA.  Two loving daughters Ann R. Tyus, husband Charles of Jarratt, and Lori R. Bradley, husband Ellery of Richmond, VA.  Two special grandchildren, Charles J. (Chuck) Tyus Jr. (Ann) and Brock A. Tyus (Sarah) of Phoenix, NY.  He is survived by a loving sister, Patricia R. Beville of Richmond and aunt, Thelma R. Simmons of Emporia, VA. Extended family includes numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He grew up in Sussex County surrounded by a large extended family.  Raised on a working farm taught him independence and the value of hard work. Graduated from Jarratt High School then began a 41year career as a skilled machinist for Georgia Pacific Corp. He met and married the love of his life, Betty Abernathy of Dolphin, VA in 1960.

Bo was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, giving away more free fish which gained him many friends. Gardening was another passion he enjoyed from working the farm life. No one knew his secret to the bountiful vegetable crops that family and friends enjoyed for years.  His work philosophy was to work smarter not harder.  With a friend Mike Hall, both commiserated not enjoying shelling butter beans.  Therefore, they created a slick butter bean sheller which yielded beans without sore fingers.

He worked part time painting and a general repairman.  Was a founding member of Flag Tail Hunt Club enjoying raising dogs and deer hunting. Served on Jarratt Town Council and was a volunteer fire fighter.

Vance was a faithful member of High Hills Baptist Church. He was a Deacon, member of the counting committee, building and grounds committee. He maintained the cemetery creating the current roadmap of member plot assignments.  His great joy was teaching Men’s Sunday School class.  He prided himself on bridging the gap relating the gospel message to everyday life choices.

Mostly He loved to spend time with his family.  Always had a good story to tell and gave great advice to solve any problem any of us had. He will be deeply missed for his kindness and generous spirit, but will forever remain in our hearts.

A funeral is planned for Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at Owen Funeral Home’s chapel starting at 2pm.  Family will receive friends one hour before the service at the front of the chapel.  Immediately following the funeral, a graveside service will be held at High Hills Baptist Church cemetery. Following the service there will be a meal served to celebrate Vance’s life in the Sharon Room at High Hills Baptist Church.

The family extends a heartfelt Thank You to all our family, friends and neighbors for their overwhelming support throughout Bo’s illness.  Special thanks to his long-time physician, Dr. Michael Anderson of Emporia, VA, Jordain with Southern Va Regional Home Health, Mary Beth his primary nurse with Crater Hospice including his Aide Tracee, all of whom made it possible for Vance to die with dignity at home surrounded by his loving family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to High Hills Baptist Church, P.O. Box 296, Jarratt, Virginia 23867.
