He was predeceased by his brother, David B. Lewis, in-laws, Robert H and Meda W Spiers and sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Larry Schecter.  He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Spiers Lewis, Brother C. Ellis Lewis, and Sister-in-law, W Lieu Lewis, both of Richmond, VA, nieces, Elizabeth (Stephen) McCoy and Barbara D Lewis and Nephew, Robert Lewis (Bex).  He is also survived by his, Brother-in-laws, Bobby E Spiers (Zella) and Robert H Spiers Jr (Faye) and Sister-in-law, Gale Thomas (McGuire), 12 Nieces and Nephews, 20 Great-nieces and nephews and 15 Great-Great-nieces and nephews, along with other loving family members and special friends, including, Albert and Betty Fray, and Lisa Williams, who was like the daughter he never had! He leaves his 3 feline friends and Mama Kitty from Lowe’s, who he lovingly tended to and fed for over 18 years!

He was a graduate of both RPI and VCU going on to teach both Distributive Education and Industrial Education in various high schools in Virginia followed by a career in Retail.  Richard was a Retired U.S. Navy Reservist, retiring in 1991 with 26 years’ service, 14 years on active duty. Upon retirement from the Navy, he was a dedicated employee of Lowe’s of Lynchburg until his retirement after 24 years in 2018.

He was an active member of the Brookville Ruritan Club and former member of the Concord Ruritan Club, where he held the office of President more than once in each club, along with other offices and was Treasurer of the Brookville Community Center. He was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church where he previously served on the Board of Trustees. Richard was a Proud Lifetime Member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

He and his wife, Patricia, spent years traveling the United States and Canada, visiting friends and family, seeing State Capitols, Presidential Libraries, and along the way every Battlefield and Fort from the Revolutionary War forward, on every side of the conflict! If there was a boat ride, ferry or carriage ride along the way in their travels, they took it! He was an avid reader of Historical Military works. And the most important time was “Date Night” with his wife, Pat, at the Movies with popcorn or going out for an Ice Cream Cone, going back to their first date 52 years ago!
