Onnie Lee Woodruff

Onnie Lee Woodruff, 78, of Stony Creek, VA, took his last breath here and his first breath in Heaven on Sunday, December 24, 2023. He was born in Nash County, NC to the late William A. and Verna B. Woodruff. He was preceded in death by brothers, Daniel, Frank, Bill, Cecil, Charles “Tuck” and his sisters, Sue, Catherine, Betty and Evelyn.

Onnie was a graduate of Stony Creek High School. Smithdeal Massey Business College and had continuing education credits from the University of Virginia. For 15 years, he worked for C. W. Wright Construction Co. in Richmond as billing and payroll supervisor. In 1979, Onnie was elected Treasurer of Sussex County, Virginia where he served until his retirement in 2018. He was an active member of Readville Baptist Church and served as Trustee and Deacon and served as Trustee for the Petersburg Baptist Association. Onnie was past president of the Sussex Optimist Club and Sappony Ruritan Club. As a member of the Treasurers Association of Virginia, he had served as Secretary and at some time, on every committee. He was the recipient of their President’s Award and Community Service Award.

Onnie was a co-founder and the first chief of Sussex Courthouse Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of the Stony Creek Community Health Center.

Onnie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Brenda W. Woodruff; daughter, Lisa W. Matthews and husband, Jim; son, Ken Woodruff and wife, Angie; grandsons, Dillon Matthews and wife, Phoebe and Nolan Woodruff; granddaughters, Allison Matthews and Hannah Woodruff. He was so excited about becoming a great-grandfather in 2024. He is also survived by two sisters, Ann and Shelia and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28 at Readville Baptist Church, 20158 Princeton Rd, Stony Creek, Virginia led by his pastor, The Reverend Fred Adkins. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
