Jean Halbert Thomas, born October 18, 1922 (102 years of age), wife of the late Thornton Wynne Thomas, passed away on March 21, 2025, with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Petersburg, Virginia, the daughter of the late Mary Louise Steele and Victor Marcellus Halbert. Jean was a graduate of Petersburg High School, she attended Madison College of Virginia and graduated from Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing in the class of 1944. A World War II Veteran, Jean served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She was a devoted and active member of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years and served as a deacon and church clerk for more than 21 years. Jean served as Postmaster of the Drewryville United States Post Office for 25 years. She was an avid bridge player who enjoyed her bridge friends immensely, she was a golf fan and a true “Hokie” fan. She was a volunteer of the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for several years and a member of Drewryville Woman’s Club for over 50 years.
Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Thornton Wynne Thomas; two daughters, Mary Suzanne Thomas and Ann Fleming Kei; her sisters Ida H. Burt and Louise H. Pugh; and two brothers Richard Marcellus Halbert and Edward Murray Halbert. Survivors are her son, Thornton Wynne Thomas, Jr (wife Brenda); her granddaughter Katie Kei Miceli (Kevin) and her great granddaughter, Suzanna Reese Burr; and grandson, Kevin Paul Kei, II. She is also survived by her step grandchildren Tonya Prince (Michael), Kimberly Thrower and Margaret Kei; six step great-grandchildren, Andrew and Avarie Prince, Caleb Bradshaw, Ayden and Annelee Thrower, and Demi Ann Drewry. Jean is also survived by her sister-in-law Nancy Halbert; Kevin and Randi Kei (extended family); along with many other cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church in Drewryville. Graveside committal service with military honors will immediately follow at Drewryville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at a reception in the church social hall after the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to be sent to Thomas Memorial Baptist Church of Drewryville, VA or Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department.
