Harry Edwin Evans

Harry Edwin Evans, 82, of Emporia, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013. The former president of Franklin Braid Industries in Emporia, he was currently serving on the Board of Directors of its parent company, Wayne Industries of Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Evans was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the 45th Infantry Division, known as the Thunderbirds. Harry was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities over the years. Harry was an active member of the Emporia Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Additionally, he was a longtime supporter and volunteer of the Mansion House and the Village View Foundation of which he was a past member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Evans was a talented craftsman and avid gardener which was reflected in his home and the landscape which surrounds it. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Estelle Cox Evans. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Story Evans; son, Richard Evans and wife, Gail of Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Holly Evans, Starla Maree Wacker and husband, Todd L. Wacker of Sherwood, OR and Wendellyn Ann Cordon and husband, Robert L. Cordon of Marysville, WA; four grandchildren, Sydney Evans, Alexander Story Wacker, Kielyann Maree Cordon and Robert Colton Story Cordon and three nephews, Thomas Morrison and wife Brenda, Dick Morrison and wife, Rita and Donnie Morrison and wife, Peggy. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 3 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia 23867. The funeral service with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4 at Main Street United Methodist Church. Interment will be in his hometown, Edinburg, Virginia 2 p.m. Monday, May 6 at Cedarwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Harry E. Evans Memorial at The Village View Foundation, P.O. Box 583, Emporia, Virginia 23847.
