Ribble Carpenter “R.C.” Clarke, Jr., 89, peacefully passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. Born and raised in the Old Hickory area of Dinwiddie County, he was the son of the late Ribble Clarke and Sadie Barnes Clarke. A lifelong member, Deacon and supporter of Sappony Baptist Church, he was a retired farmer, a founding member of Old Hickory Fire Department and Director and past president with years of service to Dinwiddie County Farm Bureau. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved to be with his family and friends. R.C. is survived by his wife, Annie Winfield Clarke; daughter, Faye Spiers (Robert); son, Ray Clarke (Linda); four grandchildren, Mark Spiers (Betty), Neal Spiers (Crystal), Carl Clarke (Christie) and Sarah Gunn (David); seven great-grandchildren, Adam Spiers, Hunter Spiers, Austin Spiers, Tyler Spiers, Miranda Clarke, Kevin Gunn, Ryan Gunn and family friend, Rachel Jones. R.C.’s surviving siblings are James A. Clarke (Mary Jane), Nancy Hargrave (Milton) and Nell Butterworth (H.B.). The family thanks R.C.’s devoted caregivers and friends who have taken care of our entire family for the last few months. The wonderful support of our Hospice of Virginia team is greatly appreciated. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 7 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia 23867 where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 8. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sappony Baptist Church, c/o Roy Lewis, Jr., 9183 Huske Rd, Stony Creek, VA 23882.
