James H. "Red" Thorpe

James H. “Red” Thorpe, 89, of Emporia, widower of Edna Mae Whitby Thorpe, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. He was the son of the late Reuben H. and Susie E. Newsome and was also preceded in death by one son, Glenn Thorpe and a sister, Elizabeth Crouch. Survivors include one daughter, Marilynn Dianne Porter and husband, Ed of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four sons, Michael Thorpe and wife, Katherine of Mt. Airy, NC, James “Jim” Thorpe and wife, Sue, Phillip Thorpe and wife, Wanda, all of Emporia and Anthony B. Thorpe of Mt. Airy, NC; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012. Interment will follow at Emporia Cemetery.
